Status of Spring Visits

It's come to my attention that various forums and groups have been posting that Scenic Hot Springs is open to the public. We need to dispel this notion. Scenic Hot Springs IS NOT OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!The scuttlebutt is a result of various postings on the Internet and the continued good graces of the owner. Also, this property is very difficult to prevent access. So let me be blunt . . . if you

A Trip Report from a Volunteer - 12-29-2005

Note: Jason, the writer of this trip report, had explicit permission to be on the property, helping to collect the empirical data we need. Scenic Hot Springs still remains 'posted' property. The springs remain running at good temperatures with the exception of the lower east spring which is an astonishing low 96 degs. Also, the west springs (Bear Den Springs) are the hotter of the two, indicating

Lot's of Snow up at the Springs

Snow level is way down to 1,500 to 2,000 ft with this latest series of storms . . . and a lot of heavy snow has been deposited up on the hot springs slope. The latest attempt by George and Matt and Mike with 4-wheel drive and chained off-roaders got them no further than the first BPA Tower. The access road is a no-go! We are doing a yo-yo with the temps as well, forming a slick heavy layer that

Cleanup Party a Success

Our clean up party on the 15th of October shouls have told Steve Pool of KOMO News Weather that he has no idea of what the weather will be. What a perfect day for climbing around in the mountains and getting a labor of love done.Twenty-five people showed up and I met them with donuts while Robert brewed coffee at the gate. We then proceeded up to the BPA Easement clearcut area to park securely.

Scenic Hot Springs Work Party

There will be a Scenic Hot Springs Work Party on October the 15th for those who wish to attend. In general, we are looking at clearing some more brush from the trails and in the area just west of the present pool. We would also like to do some proactive clearing of culverts on the BPA road and, if possible, installation of water bars on the trail to control erosion that spring snowmelt and

Scenic Development Update

Guess I've been remiss is keeping people updated on Scenic so I'll try my best to give you what I have to date. Mike's idea for Scenic has been well described earlier so I'll briefly touch on it. At the time Mike bought the property, one soaking pool remained in place from the sheriffs department destruction of 2003. That is the Monster Tub up at the original upper springs location. When Mike

Interesting Tidbit on Scenic's Geology

Was talking to a former habituate of Scenic the other day about his first visit up to the springs since the closure of 2001. He mentioned the day of the earthquake in 2001 (the Nisqually earthquake) and hoping that the trembler had not rearranged the plumbing up at Scenic like it had in 1949."What do you mean, like in 1949?" I asked him and he replied that the 1949 Seattle earthquake pretty well

What's the skinny on visiting Scenic Hot Springs?

Well, the springs are still there . . . and so is the original Monster Tub, now subdivided down the center into two soaking polls. The question I hear most often is 'I'd like to go back to the springs but can I?'The answer is a conditional 'yes'. The property is posted . . . why? Because the owner must limit his liability. But you need to read between the lines here. I've known Mike for some

Photo: We begin today's post with something I always enjoy history.

Update: Scenic Happenings

It's been three months since I last posted and that's mainly because I've been busy and there is little that can be reported that is not conjecture or speculation as far as development efforts go. Also, I must respect the owner's confidences until such point that he suggests it is okay to talk about some of the developments vis a' vis negotiations with state and local officials. Mike has

Good Soaking on Tuesday

Tuesday was a gloriously clear day and I took the opportunity to get some measurements done. And then I went up to check out the upper pool and get some temperature measurements.

Though there is a good coating of powdery snow all over (the trees look marvelous), I was surprised that the springs are running pretty warm . . . in fact, the Lobster Spring (at least the upper one) has reverted back

Update on Scenic Hot Springs

I thought I'd ramble just a little bit about what's happening at Scenic Hot Springs.

Mike, the new owner of the property, is still jumping through the hoops of bureauacracy in order to get the permits to take the springs public and I have been accompanying him on almost a weekly basis in surveying the terrain of the property . . . charting the location of all the springs (we've discovered a
